We finished the year with Derek and Martin doing most of the work. Pat managed to develop a sore back just as it got warmer.

The guys did a sterling job of heavy duty maintenance readying the various areas for the summer break.

A fair amount of mulching needs to be done, especially on the mini slope, as we are are alwaya in danger of losing plants as the soil dries out. Fortunately the summer has not been as hot as usual.

We have worked our way around the various blocks to weed and clear as the spring brings rapid growth of weeds in all our established areas.

Keith seems to have left us and we thank him for the time he gave us.

Derek and Pat have pulled, heaved and conquered various blocks ot docks, grasses and sprouting paspallum, a new weed bag has been filled on the min i slope.

Martin has been having a break during the last two weeks but prior to that...

Now that Keith has joined us, the guys are making a real difference to plant pest areas.  The guys cut and slash at Gorse and Honeysuckle and Pat weeds and pulls out docks. If they are pulled early then they do not grow to 6 foot.

Derek, Martin and Keith have been attacking the gorse at the top of the Honeysuckle bank. They have made a real incursion into the growth. We have also had a hard time propping up a couple of Kanuka that are directly in the path of strong...

Ongoing work on Derek's Slope. Martin and Derek did the hard bits cutting down the honeysuckle and gorse and carting it down the slope to the residue pile, and Pat did weeding  at the bottom of the slope. A huge pile of drying material at the bottom of the slope.

A blitz was made on emerging gorse seedlings. There suddenly seems to be a lot around.

Keith, a visitor from Canada came to help on the 5th June. Having 3 men on the honeysuckle slope mad...

Very heavy duty work happening. Derek transported on his back, all the ginger he had dug, up to the tool area then took it away gradually in an old wheelie bin.

Martin has been away in Australia for his job so while he has been away Pat and Derek have been digging gorse and paspalum out of the path dividing the upper and lower valley.  Derek has done most of the work Pat has dug out paspalum on the bottom ot the bank and created piles. It is so interesting that gorse se...

Really heavy attack on the area below the stadium bank. Melissa and Sel joined us to do a special Tradescantia blitz. Derek is being very good with Tradescantia as well.

The weeding on the bank also proceeds. Many bags of weeds removed.  It is never ending.

As Abdul has been stopped from weed eating in the area the bottom flood plain is looking like a weed jungle. We may have to purchase a weed eater if we can and do it ourselves.

Unable to weed on the 17th, very welco...

More of the same. All of us weeded on the left of the track below the Stadium.  The whole area infested with paspalum.  Huge clumps needing digging out. Derek and Martin went for it like crazy. Pat did what she could. We found and filled a large weedbag. Martin had to leave a little early and just as well because it is still so hot we were drenched.

Derek has dug out bags and bags of ginger root from his Honeysuckle area.

Pat and Martin have...

Not a lot happening this month because of the heat and things happening to the team.

Martin handed over the trapping management as he is so busy at work.

Slow easing into the new year.  Last week we walked around looking for any damage incurred over the summer. We went down as far as the harbour inlet/stream and found a couple of spots that need a bit of clearing. Derek is very good with his saw. We found a very odd noise in a tree at the edge of the inlet. It was not a cicada and seemed too regular to be an insect. Martin took a sound recording of it and is looking for answers to the mystery.

Last Sunday Martin brought...

Very vigorous work on the Honeysuckle block over this period. Derek and Martin have been working like supermen. Last week we  weeded  the bank behind the Stadium first and then adjoined to the Honeysuckle block.

Today Martin is trapping so less manpower applied to the Honeysuckle block. Derek will probably be back there this morning. Having Derek contribute  his time has made a huge difference.

Derek has a very good chain saw. We noticed the Lacebark that had been squashed by last year's falling Sycamore, was sprouting. It was caught right under the fallen tree. Derek kindly cut the fallen trunk back to a place where we could  stand the Lacebark up and support it with pieces of cut logs. It seems to be doing well and the rain last night will be a real help.

We emptied the weed bag at that same place and weeded and cleaned up the area. The soil was carted&...

This is Derek's report to Marting of the activity last Sundayt. Martin was running the marathon.

"Pat & I had a productive day, we cleared more of the Japanese honeysuckle - we're starting to make some headway along this bank! next week i'll bring the chainsaw and clear some of that Poplar that fell and crushed a native you guys planted. Pat pointed out it was still alive underneath."

Derek did the most amazing work. All Pat did was haul cut bits up the...
